October Hunts

Our duck season traditionally opens the first Saturday in October. It catches most of the locally produced ducks prior to the migration getting into full swing. The hunting is done primarily on private leases.  Chest waders are almost always a must. Mallards, Wood Ducks, Green-Winged Teal, Blue-Winged Teal and Black Ducks make up the bag.

Hunting flooded timber swamps in early October is chilly in the morning and hot by noontime. "Woodies", Mallards, Blue-Wing and Green-Wing Teal are most common. The  Small ducks are fast, but these used car dealers were faster.

The boys from Moeller Marine Products found themselves  "over choked" for the 10-15 yard shots that made up this hunt in flooded timber 10-05-03.

Bryan Campbell's group from Syracuse N.Y. killed a nice batch of Wigeon, hunting with Charlie on one of our leases. 10-25-03

A mixed bag of puddle ducks killed in mid October.

Backwoods beaver ponds are the spot for early October Woodies.

Fully plumed drake Wood Ducks are common in October. These birds were headed straight for the taxidermist.

Which drake Wood Duck is the nicest? It's hard to pick just one.

Good shooting means getting to where the birds want to be. Chest waders are standard equipment during October hunts.
